Studying locally first to save costs

KAJANG: Government scholarship holders may soon have to do part of their studies at local institutions of higher education before going abroad.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said this was part of cost-saving measures to limit government expenditure."We need to have more collaborations between local and overseas universities. That way, we can have our students complete half their studies locally and then transfer their credits abroad. "Local universities already have programmes which are more or less the same as those offered in foreign universities."He said these measures were aimed at ensuring that the government would be able to afford more scholarships for students.
"This way, we can strengthen our local universities by letting the best study here for a while," Khaled said, after witnessing the signing of two memorandums of agreement between Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College and Rezzen (M) Sdn Bhd and the Government of Yemen.

RM50,000 fee hike grounds flying school students

KUALA LUMPUR: Students at a flying school in Langkawi may have their wings clipped unless they add RM50,000 to the RM170,000 they have already paid in fees.
The 21 final semester students at HM Aerospace -- seven of whom are being sponsored by Malaysia Airlines -- have to pay up, or risk not being allowed to continue with their flying lessons. Most of the students who complained about the increase did not want to be named, fearing action would be taken against them by the college. "We have entered the final stages of our training. The college has stopped all our flying lessons until the extra RM50,000 has been paid or until an assurance that it will be paid is given. "They sent letters to our parents telling them the increase was because of a pay rise given to instructors, and for spare parts for airplane engines," said a student.
He said there had been no advance warning that the fees would be increased, adding that his parents, who were not wealthy, were now in a quandary over how to pay the additional amount.HM Aerospace is owned by the Halim Mazmin Group.Group executive chairman Tan Sri Halim Mohammad said the matter was a commercial transaction between the college and its students."The school has every right to institute a reasonable increase, and the total of RM220,000 is reasonable. "Malaysia is still the cheapest place to learn to fly. In the United Kingdom, the cost is 21/2 times more than what it is here," he said.
